Gilardi: Tappeto-Natura
Domenico Palma
USA, 2023, 21'
Synopsis
Portrait in the intimacy of his own studio, a few months before his passing in March 2023, Piero Gilardi reveals details about his life and work, shedding light on his role as a bridge between the American artistic scene and the Italian scene of the 1970s. His polyurethane foam works faithfully reproduce natural settings such as a riverbed, a gravel beach, a vegetable garden, a garden, or undergrowth. His work is simultaneously ironic and critical of human intervention that has transformed nature into a sterile and artificial reality. The documentary was filmed on the occasion of the exhibition Gilardi: Nature Carpet, at Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring, New York, and is enriched by interviews with curator Elena Re and director Vittorio Calabrese.
